Important: Changes to .ca domain requirements

CIRA, the registry operator for .ca domain extension, is making changes to their requirements effective April 21, 2022.

Please note that while this notice pertains to the .ca domain extension, it is important that the owners of any domain name keep their contact information up-to-date and accurate. This notice is a good reminder to everyone that they should ensure the name, registrant and most importantly, the Email contact address listed on the domain registration is correct and actively working.

What’s changing?

1) Regardless of how your current .ca domain registration is filled out, you must provide an Organization Name value when submitting a registration, transfer, trade, or contact update for a registrant that is a legal entity.

Our system identifies the registrant as a legal entity if its “legal type” is anything other than a natural person value (Aboriginal Peoples, Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Legal Representative of a Canadian Citizen, or Permanent Resident).

These rules and requirements always existed but some people registered their .ca domain without adhering to them.

2)
CIRA is urging all registered .ca domain holders to ensure that invalid registrant emails are updated.

CIRA will not be taking any specific action on domains with invalid registrant email addresses. However, CIRA does regularly reach out to registrants at random and ask them to complete a Registrant Identify Validation (RIV), and they send this request to the registrant email. Failure to respond to the RIV request results in the eventual deletion of the domain name. Therefore, it is extremely important that the registrant email is up to date.
